SUSAN APPLEGATE KROUSE GRADUATE FELLOWSHIP

Applications are requested for the Susan Applegate Krouse Graduate Research Fellowship. Dr. Susan Applegate Krouse (Oklahoma Cherokee) joined the Department of Anthropology at Michigan State University (MSU) in 1998, and developed the department’s contribution to American Indian and Indigenous Studies. She directed American Indian and Indigenous Studies from 2005-2010. Dr. Krouse took a leadership role recruiting and supporting faculty, as well as undergraduate and graduate students interested in focusing on American Indian and Indigenous Studies. She understood the importance of engaged scholarship and giving back to Native communities where she lived. Dr. Susan Applegate Krouse, Ziigwam Nibi Kwe (Spring Water Woman) walked on July 12, 2010. An Undergraduate Scholarship has also been made available in her honor. These awards reflect Dr. Krouse’s remarkable career and continuing legacy to students who are dedicated to American Indian and Indigenous and Indian Studies.

SUSAN APPLEGATE KROUSE GRADUATE RESEARCH FELLOWSHIP

American Indian and Indigenous Studies is pleased to announce the third application process for the Susan Applegate Krouse graduate research fellowship to be awarded Spring 2023. The purpose of this fellowship is to support PhD, DMA, or MFA students at MSU who are in the research stages of their major degree project. The award supports conducting preparatory research – such as travel and costs associated with visiting archives – or with field research to engage with Tribal and Native community for the development of dissertation research.

APPLICATION MATERIALS – SUBMIT APPLICATION AS A SINGLE PDF TO AIIS@MSU.EDU

  1. A statement, not to exceed two double-spaced pages describing specific research plan. The statement should include information about the field or research site; the reasons to perform field or archival work in that specific site; and how it benefits work towards the doctoral proposal or dissertation. It should also explain why no other fellow- ships/sources of funding can be used to cover the expenses of the proposed work. Please remember that the review committee is likely to be composed of faculty who specialize in American Indian Studies, but may be outside your discipline. You will need to situate your statement within a framework understandable to educated non-specialists.
  2. An approximate budget for travel expenses (transportation, per diem meals and incidentals, any fees). Visit the MSU-CONUS website for up-to-date per diem rates for locations.
  3. A curriculum vitae, highlighting publications, presentations, exhibits, any special awards received (if available), and other activities related to the research field.
  4. A brief letter of support from the primary or major advisor – usually the PhD guidance or dissertation committee chair. This letter, which should be emailed directly to arola@msu.edu, should briefly address the applicant’s progress toward the degree, as well as the quality and significance of the project.
  5. Include the phrase ‘Krouse Scholarship’ in the email subject line.

EVALUATION CRITERIA

  • Quality and clarity of proposal.
  • Relationship of project to American Indian and Indigenous Studies in the discipline or interdisciplinary area.
  • Student record and progress toward degree.
  • Letter of recommendation.

AWARD AMOUNT: One award per academic year will be granted in the amount of $1,000.

NOTE: Additional materials, including additional letters of recommendation, chapters of theses or dissertation, will not be considered. Also, this fellowship may not be applied to the payment of course tuition and fees.
