ANISHINAABE-GIKENDAASOWIN

Anishinaabe-gikendaasowin – meaning Indigenous knowledge – is a series of workshops, Medicine Walks, activities, and trips based around teaching/learning Indigenous ecological knowledge. Throughout the year, including during the summer, AIIS will organize seasonal activities, and connect the MSU community with community-based knowledge-holders.

Beginning in Spring 2016, AIIS commenced our first Urban Sugar Bush (Iskimamizigan) in collaboration with Fenner Nature Center. This iskimamizigan builds upon previous work faculty have done at Fenner Nature Center, including harvesting wiigob (basswood) and other mshkikiwan (medicines), taking urban Native youth on Medicine Walks, and working on a wiigiwaasi-jiimaan (birchbark canoe). A long-term goal is to establish a ‘bush university’ on MSU’s campus where students engage in ‘learning on the land’.
